I’ve heard pastors say over the years that worship is really worth-ship, the act of assigning worth to a person or object. When we worship God, or anything really, we assign a level of worthiness to it. When we worship, we assign value, we give our valuation just like an investor does with a business, and from that valuation, we decide whether or not to act. So if all of that is true, which I believe it is, then let me ask a question:
What is God worth to you?
Simple enough question. Not so simple to answer.
Many would immediately say, “He is worthy of it all!” We sing songs about it and join with our congregations lifting our hands high, but really think about it. Think about your life over the last 15 days of this month. If we were to examine your life over that time, what valuation would we determine you gave to God? What would his worth really be?
We have to be sure to look past Sunday mornings when everyone around us is joined together singing. We have to gauge that worthiness past the Bible study and encouraging messages. This question makes us dig deeper. Deep into our Monday mornings and Thursday afternoons. Deep into those moments when our business is overwhelming.
I asked myself that question. And some others…
What worth do I give to God when he wants me to wake up early to spend time with him? Do I value that extra hour of sleep more than my Savior?
What worth do I give to God when a stranger on the street needs me? Is another person, made in his image and loved just like I am worth it? Is his command to help valuable?
What worth do I give to God during worship? Am I going through motions, still tired from the day before? Or do I really worship him like he deserves?
What worth do I give God when it comes to giving? Do I show him I can trust him even if the numbers don’t add up, or, with my actions and worry, show him I can’t?
Am I doing so many things, good or bad, that I fail to show God how much he really means to me?
Am I quick to show my family how much they mean to me everyday but am unaffected if I don’t speak to God but twice a week?
What is God really worth to you? What does he really mean to you? He is either you’re only hope or your genie. He’s either your salvation or your bailout. He is either your first thought or an afterthought.
I don’t want to use God, I want to worth-ship him. I want my life, my actions, to show him how much I value him. I don’t ever want God to look at me and wonder, “Does he really value me?” Who wants to be in a relationship like that?
God, you ARE worthy. Just tell him that. God, you ARE worthy. You are valuable. Maybe your life hasn’t shown that. All you have to do is ask for forgiveness and repent. He is faithful and just to forgive. You know why? How can he be so ready to forgive us if we just ask? Crazy, right? There’s a simple answer why.
Because he believe YOU are worth it. The value God assigned to you was demonstrated on the cross. You are worth his own life. That’s how much you are worth.
How worthy is he?
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
Be blessed, and show God how worthy he truly is,
