Let me tell you two quick things about accountability. First, accountability is not something that is optional. You need it. I mean, God himself said that is not good for man to be alone. I don’t think for a second he just meant we need a spouse. We need friends in our lives that help us stay on God’s path.

The second thing is about the word accountability The root comes from the Latin word computare, which means literally “to calculate.” If you look at the rest of the word, it is easy to see the word ability. So, if you want to get down to it, accountability is a counting of your ability.

See, accountability is not giving people control over your life. You are asking someone to count your ability in areas of your life. I don’t know about you, but there are times when I give myself more credit than I should. My accounting of my ability to overcome sin or handle a tough situation is off. That’s why I need friends in my life who will lovingly, but honestly tell me what I need to hear, not just what I want to hear.

So if you don’t have someone you can be accountable to, take care of that today. At the end of the day, we ALL need someone other than ourselves to count our ability.
